Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) |
Well, they've done it again. Forget the will of the people. Forget the message of the November 2nd election, "Cut taxes, Stop spending." Sen. Harry Reid, has brought to the floor an omnibus spending bill just as Senator McCain warned. In lieu of a short-term continuing resolution to keep the federal government funded until the 112th Congress takes over in January, the Democrats want to pass a 'pork laden" omnibus package that funds not only the government but a multitude of pet spending projects through FY 2011 allowing them to continue their spending habit. Passage of the bill would circumvent Rep. Paul Ryan's ability as the Chairman of the House Budget Committee for the 112th Congress to limit spending and create responsible appropriations in response to President Obama's FY 2011 budget.
Senate Republicans have vowed to defeat the bill. Some Democrats (most likely those up for re-election in 2012) are considering breaking rank and voting "nay" as well. Sen. Judd Gregg, (R-NH) is filing an amendment that will substitute a 45 day "clean, continuing resolution" in its place, according to Sen. McCain. If anything, the very submission of this omnibus bill proves how out of step the Left continues to be with the American people.
Since November 14th, we've been reporting on the 111th Democrats desire to "legislate forward" and stop the 112th from reducing the Democrats ability to spend. It seemed clear the method was to pass a funding measure that would ensure current spending levels through FY 2011. That bill passed the House as a "continuing resolution" on December 8th. But, today the Senate offered its own resolution, an omnibus spending bill that will add $1.1T to the national deficit... This is in addition to the approximate $1T Tax Cut Extensions Package. It truly leaves one incredulous.
Further, Sen. Reid has vowed to keep the Senate in session until Christmas Eve and call them back to work until the 112th gavels in, January 4th. In addition to the Tax Cuts Extension Package, Reid wants to pass the START treaty; a stand alone version to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"; the Dream Act; Defense Appropriations; and the 1.1T Omnibus bill. Leaves you wondering what they did all year.
